Well it was another busy day with a trip to the Great Central Railway and a surprise visit from the media!
However, first the children spent some time rehearsing for the end of visit party. At 10.30am we left in the minibus and headed to the Great Central Railway in Loughborough where we were greeted by Mike, the CGR volunteer who welcomed us before letting us have a little look around the museum.
At 11.30am, there was much excitement as we were met by Helen McCarthy from BBC Radio Leicester and a photographer and journalist from the Leicester Mercury who took lots of photos before going live on the radio at 11.45. Helen interviewed Jim, Yuliya and Pasha, who spoke about the charity and the work of the volunteers. The interview can be heard via the BBC iPlayer (1h44m30s in).
We then all piled onto the waiting steam train, called the ‘Black 5’, and set off. Full steam ahead! On the train the children had their lunch and were treated to water and sweets, courtesy of the railway. The children loved the train ride. When we got back to the station we were given a tour of the engine shed and saw some of the carriages being repaired.
When it was time to go, the children all said a big ‘thank you very much’ to Mike for organising our visit and headed back to the Scout Hut for a little bit more rehearsing before home time.
Thanks for Jim and Yuliya (and Pasha) for their starring role on the radio and Val and David for volunteering.
Here is a tweet from Helen McCarthy with a short video clip of the children singing…

See you then
